  Kyrgyz Prime Minister ends visit to Uzbekistan
  Kyrgyz Prime Minister Amangeldy Muraliyev ended his two-day official visit to Uzbekistan on Saturday by singing several intergovernmental documents. During the visit, Muraliyev had talks with Uzbek President Islam Karimov to discuss the development of trade and economic relations between the two countries and political and cultural cooperation. Karimov praised relations between the two countries and stressed that "there are certain problems hampering the development of our cooperation. A speedy resolution of these problems will benefit both Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan." Muraliyev's official visit coincided with the first meeting of the intergovernmental commission on bilateral cooperation, which was attended by the Kyrgyz prime minister and his Uzbek counterpart Utkur Sultanov. The meeting discussed ways to deepen economic relations between the two countries, expand cultural ties and develop cooperation in other areas. The sides particularly discussed the drafting of documents for further strengthening of the legal basis for bilateral relations and contacts in the field of hydro- power production and transport. Based on the results of the meeting, the prime ministers signed an agreement on joint measures to fight illegal drug trafficking and crime. Uzbek Vice-Prime Minister Rustam Yunusov and Kyrgyz Vice- Prime Minister Esengul Omuraliyev signed a protocol of the intergovernmental commission. The Uzbek Ministry of Social Welfare and the Kyrgyz Ministry of Labour and Social Protection signed an agreement on cooperation in the fields of information exchanges and social protection of the population. Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan have already signed 55 documents on cooperation in various areas. Muraliyev began the second day of his trip to Uzbekistan by visiting the parliament and a meeting with its chairman, Erkin Khalilov, to discuss prospects for inter-parliamentary ties between the two countries. In the afternoon, Muraliyev flew to Kyrgyzstan.
 
  Korea gives $10 mln. to update Uzbekistan telecommunications
  South Korea has provided 10 million U.S. dollars to modernise and develop Uzbekistan's telecommunications. The long-term loan has been provided by Korea's cooperation fund for economic development at a low interest rate under an agreement signed by the governments of the two countries in Tashkent, the Finance Ministry told Itar-Tass on Saturday. The loan has been provided for a period of 20 years at a 3 percent interest rate with a five-year grace period. The money will be used to build new telephone exchange stations for about 100,000 lines and more than 300 kilometres of fiber-optic communications lines by the year 2001.
 
  Uzbekistan marks world population day
  On Sunday, Uzbekistan marks the World Population Day, which is observed under the auspices of the United Nations as a Day of Six Billion. According to U.N. data, on Sunday the world's population is to reach the 6,000-million mark, an official at the Uzbekistan State Committee for Economics and Statistics has told Itar-Tass. Uzbekistan's population last year was 24.1 million. Experts forecast that the republic's population is to increase up to 36.5 million in the year 2025. Work to protect the reproductive health of the population, family planning, and information of the republic's people of demography matters has been conducted in Uzbekistan since 1992 with the assistance with the U.N. International Population Fund. Until now, the republic's general programme of action in this respect was estimated at 5.3 million U.S. dollars. A new programme, estimated at 7,500 million USD, has been prepared for a period from 2,000 to 2, 004.
 
  Uzbek player to win Girls's Wimbledon
  For the first time in the history of Wimbledon and Asia a player from Uzbekistan won such a prestigious tournament in girls's competition. Iroda Tulaganova, 17, had to play 127 games to win the hearts of English fans. She defeated Russian Krasnorutskaya in the finals 7:5, 6:4. Earlier this year Iroda won several tournaments in Japan and South Korea and became number 1 among girls in Asia.
