Declaration by the Presidency of the European Union on Uzbekistan and the situation concerning Elena Urlaeva and Sanjar Umarov

UK Presidency of the EU 2005
October 25

The European Union expresses deep concern that despite the Presidency statement of 19 October, treatment has begun on Elena Urlaeva. The European Union renews its call to suspend treatment pending the outcome of her appeal against this treatment, and until an independent assessment can be made of her condition.

The European Union is also concerned that in the mean time Mr Umarov, leader of the Sunshine Coalition, has been arrested, and seeks clarification of the charges against Mr Umarov and his current whereabouts. The European Union hopes that Mr Umarov will be treated according to international norms. The European Union hopes that he will continue to have full access to his lawyers, his family and others concerned about his wellbeing.
