US condemns forced psychiatric treatment of Uzbekistan rights activist

Voice of America October 22 The United States has condemned Uzbekistan for its forcible psychiatric treatment of human rights activist Elena Urlayeva. In a statement released Friday, the State Department said treating political dissidents as victims of psychosis is a tactic used by repressive regimes. It said Ms. Urlayeva had previously been subjected to forced psychiatric treatment. A criminal court ordered the Uzbek human rights activist to undergo treatment on October 18th.
