Uzbekistan have moved to quash rumours that the country is planning to move from Asia to join UEFA.

According to the Asian Football Confederation's official website, a senior executive in the Central Asian's Football Federation, Alisher Nikambaev was quoted by Reuters as saying, "We, in Uzbekistan, always wanted to be a part of UEFA and after the latest events this process will certainly gain a new momentum".

Those latest events are more than likely a reference to the controversy that surrounded Uzbekistan's World Cup Asian Zone play-off with Bahrain when FIFA ordered the first leg to be replayed which Uzbekistan won. Bahrain triumphed in the replay to face a Trinidad and Tobago in the a play-off in November.

However, Nikambaev quickly denied such rumours. "Maybe the correspondent wanted to join UEFA. There is absolutely no truth in the report. Uzbekistan's main aim is to qualify for the World Cup and our best chance to do that is in Asia."
