The maiden medal of the first Afro-Asian Games went to Uzbekistan's Nachaev Ravil when he won the gold in the 50-metre freestyle race today, as the curtain went up for the swimming competition of the nine-day meet.

The Uzbek upset Chinese favourite Than Zuo, who had to settle for a silver, falling behind with a narrow margin of .07 seconds.

Ravil clocked 23.63 seconds to Zuo's 23.70 seconds. Nigeria's Musa Bakare won the bronze, clocking 23.87 seconds.
