November 21The youngest daughter of Uzbek President Islam Karimov today criticized conditions at state-run orphanages. Lola Karimova, head of the "You Are Not Alone" children's charity, said many of the more than 700 children recently examined in six Tashkent orphanages had bruises or other marks of injuries.
Karimova said many children complained of being regularly beaten by their caretakers and children are regularly underfed in some orphanages.
All orphanages in Uzbekistan are state-run.
