The first consignment of nuclear waste from a research rector will arrive in Russia from Uzbekistan, a source in the Russian Atomic Energy Ministry told Interfax on Tuesday.

"This will be a consignment of a few kilograms of nuclear waste from a research reactor in Ulugbek," he said. For security reasons, he could not specify the time when the consignment will be moved from Uzbekistan.

"Russia used to take only fresh nuclear fuel from research reactors abroad," the source said.

Russia is implementing these projects under the IAEA's auspices with U.S. financing.
