April 24President Islam Karimov spoke about introducing changes to the Constitution in front of the Uzbek Parliament on Thursday.
President Karimov: "The addenda and amendments that are being suggested will not touch on the essence and content, aim and tasks of our Constitution. Above all, they will touch upon regulations and articles about the Supreme Assembly, determining the status and authority of its lower and upper chambers, the authority of the president of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Cabinet of Ministers, and the basis of the electoral system."
The wording of the Article 89 of our Constitution will be changed principally. President Islam Karimov said the following on this:
"The second part of this Article which says that the president of the Republic of Uzbekistan at the same time is the chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers will be removed. This method of redestribution of presidential powers and authority, without any doubt, makes it possible to deepen further the democratic reforms in the construction of the state, increase the authority of the prime minister, government and its structures and increase their responsibility significantly, and this will be fixed in the Constitution."
