CIS summit in Moldovan capital ends, new drugs strategy agreed

October 8The summit of CIS leaders has ended its work in the Moldovan capital of Chisinau. President Karimov also took part in this top-level meeting. First the heads of 11 states held a compact meeting to discuss various issues on the agenda. Then the delegations continued discussions in an expanded form.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said this summit was very different from the previous meetings, that the correct lesson had been drawn from previous mistakes and shortcomings and the work to be done in the future had been determined precisely. Now a number of documents and agreements would be strictly controlled by the heads of state. It was also agreed to fight jointly against the common threat. Especially expedient was the formation of a Central Asian antiterrorist department of the CIS. In accordance with this, the CIS southern borders will be protected against external threat and an end will be put to the transit of narcotic substances to Europe across the Central Asian states. There will be 60 CIS special servicemen working for the Central Asian antiterrorist department.
State documents were signed at the Chisinau summit on the joint fight against organized crime in cooperation with the law-enforcement agencies in 2003-2004.
The president noted that the formation of a single economic space on the territory of the CIS states will expand economic relations. Vladimir Putin proposed that Ukraine chairs the next CIS meetings. The issue will be settled at the next meeting of the [CIS] heads of state. The summit also considered the issue of preparing for the 60th anniversary of victory in the Second World War.
The CIS leaders have positively accepted the idea of creating a single fuel and power complex, in accordance with which the heads of the energy systems of the CIS states will meet in Moscow in late October.
After the end of the official part of the CIS summit President Putin held a reception for the heads of state at the Russian embassy in Chisinau on the occasion of his 50th birthday.
