All private restaurants and market stalls selling souvenirs and artefacts in Sayilgoh Street (otherwise known as Broadway) in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent, will have been removed by 1 December 2002, the Uzbek newspaper Hurriyat reported on 20 November.

The head of the Tashkent city administration's press service, Dilshodbek Nazirov, told the paper that the administration had decided to rebuild the central part of the city ahead of a World Bank annual meeting that is due to be held in Tashkent in May 2003. "Our aim is to turn Sayilgoh Street into a real culture and spirituality centre. You know that the street is in the central part of Tashkent. The administration also aims to create better opportunities and provide as many amenities as it can to people visiting the capital," Dilshodbek Nazirov said.
