President Islam Karimov of Uzbekistan has visited southern Kashkadarya Region to take part in festivities devoted to the 2700th anniversary of the town of Shahrisabz, Uzbek radio reported on 1 November.

In his speech broadcast on Uzbek radio live the same day, Karimov said: "When we speak about Shahrisabz, above all we remember our forefather Tamerlane, who surprised the world with his intellect and incomparable abilities. Shahrisabz is the place where this great man was born and brought up. It was this land that inspired our forefather in his efforts to unite the nation, liberate our motherland from invaders and build a great and powerful state that went down in history. Tamerlane loved Shahrisabz from the bottom of his heart and even considered making this place the capital of his empire."

He said that he was proud of working in Kashkadarya Region in the past and thanked people living in the region for their support. "I worked with you, my dear friends in Kashkadarya, shoulder to shoulder. I will never forget those unforgettable and good days of my life. During those difficult years you respected and trusted me, if I may say so, as if you gave me wings, and I am always grateful for that," he said.
