Tajik, Uzbek leaders discuss regional security, Afghanistan

n the evening of 6 June 2002, Tajik President Emomali Rahmonov, who is now in St Petersburg for a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization [SCO] member states, held a bilateral meeting with Uzbek President Islam Karimov.
The sides had a detailed discussion about the development and extension of Tajik-Uzbek cooperation at the current stage. In this context, the presidents agreed that the work of such an important mechanism for bilateral and multilateral collaboration as the intergovernmental joint commission for cooperation should be resumed in the near future.
Special attention was paid to regional security, the situation in the South Asian region and counteracting the forces of international terrorism. The heads of state noted with satisfaction the positive internal political changes in Afghanistan, and expressed their support for the trend towards the consolidation of the Afghan people in the run-up to the Loya Jerga and the formation of the transitional Afghan government.
During the meeting, which was held in a friendly atmosphere, Rahmonov invited the Uzbek president to pay an official visit to Tajikistan. The invitation was accepted with gratitude.
