Uzbekistan vows to supply gas, electricity to Tajikistan by April 2003

Tajik President Emomali Rahmonov had a telephone conversation with Uzbek President Islam Karimov on 20 December.

In keeping with an agreement that was reached, a government delegation led by Prime Minister Oqil Oqilov left for [the Uzbek capital] Tashkent on 20 December to consider a series of most important issues in bilateral cooperation.

On the same day, talks were held between the government delegations of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to increase the delivery of natural gas and electricity from Uzbekistan to Tajikistan. During the talks, held in a creative atmosphere, they agreed that, by 1 April 2003, Uzbekistan would supply Tajikistan with over 900m cubic metres of natural gas, 790m kilowatt-hours of electricity, and fuels and lubricants derived from liquefied gas, the presidential press centre reported.
