Italy's Techint SpA plans to launch a plant to produce automobile glass in the city of Fergana in Uzbekistan in the first quarter 2003, at a cost of EUR 21.2 million, a source in Uzavtoprom, which ordered the construction, told Interfax.

The plant has the capacity to produce 200,000 automobile kits per annum, the source said.

The company's products will be supplied to the automobile plants UzDaewooAvto and SamKochAvto, and will also be used in the production of agricultural machinery in Uzbekistan and be exported.

In addition, as part of a program to localize the Uzbek automobile industry Techint has completed the modernization of an architectural-construction glass production line at AO Quartz (Kuvasai, Fergana region) at a cost of EUR 15.8 million. About 15% of the architectural-construction glass produced by Quartz will be used to produce automobile glass.

It is planned to finance the project using credits from Italian banks and funds from the Uzbek companies.
