U.S. appropriates nearly $500 million to aid Uzbekistan in 2002

The United States will provide aid worth nearly $500 million to Uzbekistan in the whole of 2002, says a U.S. Embassy press release made available to Interfax on Wednesday.

Of that amount, democracy promotion programs account for $26.2 million; social services, $45.5 million; market reforms, $10.9 million; security and law enforcement agencies, $79.0 million; humanitarian aid, $53.1 million; and local development programs, $5.5 million.

Additionally, the State Department and Defense Department carried out in the Fergana valley in August a $53 million project for modernizing hospitals in Fergana, Andizhan and Namangan.

The value of humanitarian goods delivered to Uzbekistan in 2002 exceeds $116 million, the press release says.
