September 7
hree policemen have been given a suspended sentence of three years each for
abuse of power.
An investigator of the Almalyk town police directorate of internal
affairs, M. Ilichev, and the head of an investigation department, K.
Kobets, have exceeded their authority, and the head of another department
of the town police directorate, T. Doniyarov, has abused his power.
They detained a man and kept him in a remand centre for 11 days
for no good reason. Initially, a court in Almalyk town, Tashkent Region,
sentenced all the three to five years' imprisonment, but the collegium of
the Tashkent Region court, "in adherence to the principles of humaneness
and justice", commuted these sentences, and now they've got suspended
sentences of three years.
The main point is not the severity of punishment but its inevitability for
a crime irrespective of the posts and ranks of those who have committed
it.
