Romanian foreign minister visits Uzbekistan, promotes economic cooperation

There is a considerable potential for boosting the economic relations between Romania and Uzbekistan, with a special stress on cooperation in the field of oil and natural gas, Romania's Foreign Minister and current OSCE chairman Mircea Geoana, who is on an official visit to Tashkent, said on Monday [22 October].

During the talks with Uzbek Prime Minister Otkir Sultanov, that took place at the government headquarters in Tashkent, the head of the Romanian diplomacy pointed out that the Uzbek side had received with great interest the project regarding the inauguration of a ferry boat line between the ports of Constanta and Batumi, which would ensure access to the main world commercial sea routes.

"We have agreed on the rapid creation of a governmental joint commission in the economic field, and we intend to implement several projects, including the creation of certain joint companies in the petrochemical field, until the visit of the Romanian president to Uzbekistan scheduled for next year," Geoana said.

The head of the Romanian diplomacy expressed Bucharest's interest in concluding a cooperation agreement regarding the textile industry, Uzbekistan being the world's second cotton exporter.
