zbekistan supports the US position on the
formation of an administrative structure in Afghanistan after the conflict, an
official spokesman for the Uzbek Foreign Ministry told Interfax on
Friday [17 October], commenting on a statement made by US Secretary of State
Colin Powell, who said that Afghanistan should have a coalition government
with broad representation.
"It is quite natural that the Pashtuns, who account for more than half
of Afghanistan's population, should not only be represented in this
government, but should also play an important role in it," the Uzbek
Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
"Of course, in this case, one is talking about the Pashtuns who express
a moderate ideology," the spokesman said.
During his visit to Pakistan, Secretary of State Powell said that all
political forces - former King Zaher Shah, the moderate part of the
Taleban, the Northern Alliance, and also the political leaders of
Afghanistan who are now living abroad - should take part in the
creation of the future government of Afghanistan.
