he National Security Council under Uzbek President Islam Karimov
held its regular meeting on Monday.
The meeting considered the situation in connection with carrying out an
anti-terrorist operation in Afghanistan and measured to ensure the
security of Uzbekistan and its state borders. It was stressed, during the
discussion, that the military and political situation in Afghanistan
was posing a serious threat to the security and stability in Central Asian
and the entire world. International terrorist organizations and powerful
extremist centres behind them have set up camps and bases on Afghan territory to train subversive and terrorist groups.
They have created a base for spreading the ideology of religious extremism and dogmatism,
carrying out subversive and terrorist acts in various places of the world,
illegally manufacturing drugs and expanding the drugs trade. The main
goal of terrorists is to divert the people of the region from their chosen
paths of building democratic and secular states and to set up there a regime
based on the ideology of extremism, dogmatism and religious intolerance.
Uzbekistan has warned the international community about the growing
threat of terrorism and religious extremism many times. In Istanbul in 1999,
Uzbek President Islam Karimov, delivering a speech at the summit of the
Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe called one more
time on the international community to unite forces in fighting the plague of
the 21st century. He proposed to set up an international centre to fight
terrorism. The tragic events in Washington and New York and terrorist
and criminal groups' incursions in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan in 2000 have
proven again that this evil does not belong to any religion and ethnic
group, that it is an enemy of the entire humanity and that the fight
against it should be an important task of the international community.
In connection with this, Uzbekistan supports the determination of the
United States of America and all peace-loving states to eliminate this evil,
which is the plague of the 21st century, and is ready to make its
contribution to destroy the terrorist bases and camps in Afghanistan and open its
airspace to this end.
Uzbekistan expresses its solidarity with the far-sighted and hard-working
people of Afghanistan who have become a hostage to different ideologies
and who for more than 20 years have been suffering from a fratricidal war
and international terrorism and various criminal groups which are getting
rich from the drugs and arms trade.
The meeting defined the state bodies and the relevant structures' tasks
to ensure stability and security in our country for the period of carrying
out the anti-terrorist operation in Afghanistan. Appropriate decisions on
the issues considered were adopted.

US military plane lands in Uzbekistan

France Presse
October 1
US Hercules military transport plane landed in Uzbekistan early on Sunday, the Russian television station NTV reported, at an airport 200 km from the Afghan border.
An NTV correspondent at the Khanabad airport said a similar plane took off an hour later, but was unable to say if it was the same aircraft. He also did not say what the US plane was transporting.
The station did not broadcast footage of the transport plane, citing technical difficulties. Soviet fighter jets used the Khanabad airport, built during the Soviet era, during Moscow's 1979-89 occupation of Afghanistan.
Two US reconnaissance planes landed in the former Soviet republic on September 22, according to Uzbek military sources. Neither Tashkent nor Washington has confirmed the report.
Uzbek President Islam Karimov has said that his country is prepared to offer airspace for US missions in Afghanistan, but wants a security guarantee from the United Nations in return.
