Size of Russian Orthodox congregation doubles since 1991

The size of the Russian Orthodox congregation in Uzbekistan has almost doubled from 56,000 in 1991 to 100,000 in 2001, Uzbek TV reported on 21 November.

Addressing a news conference on preparations to mark the 130th anniversary of the Russian Orthodox Church in Central Asia, the archpriest of the Uspenskiy Cathedral in Tashkent, Nikolay Rybchinskiy, said: "We are grateful for the construction and commissioning of churches. The Orthodox Church in the Republic of Uzbekistan is currently flourishing."

The television report said that the Russian Orthodox church in Uzbekistan had 36 churches and prayer houses, a seminary and three monasteries.

"The republic's leadership is giving support to the Russian Orthodox Church. Special resolutions to develop the Church have been taken," the television said.
