he number of grave crimes committed by teenagers in Uzbek Tashkent Region is a special cause for concern, Tashkentskaya Pravda newspaper reported on 17 November. "It would be unfair to say that work, which is being carried out, is not effective. However, analysis shows that this work is not sufficient. Otherwise, how it can be explained that teenagers have committed 234 various crimes in the [Tashkent] Region since the beginning of 2001.
Unfortunately, one has to state that the number of crimes has increased by 28 over the same period last year. The fact that the number of grave crimes like premeditated homicide, rape, infliction of grievous bodily harm and robberies are on the increase, is a special cause for concern," the report said.
The paper said these crimes have been committed mainly by pupils, students of colleges and teenagers who do not work or study. "A total of 69 school pupils, 11 students at colleges and other educational establishments and 147 teenagers who do not study or work committed crimes over the first nine months of the year," the article said.
