n 13 November 2001, the Uzbek Defence Ministry, the embassy of Great Britain in Uzbekistan and the British Council signed an agreement on cooperation in teaching English.
A joint project to reform the system of teaching English at the Academy of the Armed Forces and the republic's other higher military education institutions will be implemented under this agreement.
The project provides for setting up English-learning centres as well as the introduction of distant education.
The director of the project, appointed by the Defence Ministry, and the manager of the project, appointed by the British Council, will organize work to implement the project and supervise its implementation.
The implementation of the project will make it possible to improve the quality of training of English teachers and to increase the effectiveness of Uzbek servicemen's learning the language.
Preparations for the signing of this agreement started a long time ago. The British Council has been maintaining close ties with the Uzbek Defence Ministry for several years now. A group of servicemen from Uzbekistan has already undergone training in Great Britain where they improved their knowledge of the English language. The British Council is also providing assistance in upgrading the skills of teachers.
The agreement signed by Uzbek Defence Minister Qodir Ghulomov and the British ambassador to Uzbekistan, Mr Christopher Ingham, will be a milestone in the development of cooperation between Uzbekistan and Great Britain in the area of English learning.
