Adelegation from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is in Tashkent. The delegation is led by its president Jean Lemierre.

The tight schedule of the visit includes several official meetings, a meeting with business circles and also visits to major enterprises in Tashkent.

On Monday, in the second half of the day, the delegation held talks at the Association of Banks of Uzbekistan. The talks were held in English as the sides could perfectly understand each other without an interpreter. The meeting was constructive and involved an exchange of ideas on joint projects, investment issues and expansion of cooperation in the banking field.

The first results of the talks are already known. These are four agreements, three of which are of intergovernmental level. They involve modernization of Uzbekistan's railways and the heating system of eastern Andizhan Region. Under another agreement, credit lines will be opened for the National Bank of Uzbekistan.

The EBRD and the Uzbek government also signed a joint statement on expanding cooperation in the banking and financial sphere.

By the EBRD's decision, an annual meeting of the organization's board of directors will be held in Tashkent in May 2003. It will be held within the framework of an investment forum designed to attract potential investors' attention to investment opportunities in the country, to conclude an agreement on further investment in and to expand cooperation with Uzbekistan.
