Security stepped up in Uzbekistan

uthorities have stepped up security in Uzbekistan. Reinforced police posts have been set up at the entrances to all major cities and small settlements. Practically every vehicle and its passengers are thoroughly examined.
Security was also stepped up on domestic flights after the beginning of the counterterrorist operation in Afghanistan. There is a security officer on every flight. Baggage is thoroughly checked and examined at airports.
A high-ranking official at Samarkand's airport told ITAR-TASS on Saturday [3 November] that "there is practically no chance to commit a terrorist act in conditions of special control".
The population of Uzbekistan takes this with understanding.
On the whole, the situation in the country is calm and the tension that was here in the first days of the anti-terrorist operation is gone.
