Uzbek National Bank to introduce euro cash as of 1 Jan 2002

The National Bank of Uzbekistan (NBU) is to introduce euro cash in the country as of 1 January 2002, the deputy chairman of the board, Yashin Khidirov, said on 17 December.

"The NBU is the first bank in the country to import cash euros. As of 1 January 2001, the currency may be withdrawn through accounts in departments and branches of the bank and other currencies may be exchanged for the euro," Khidirov said.

Asked what precautions his bank had taken to protect his clients from forgeries, he said: "We have special detectors for testing the authenticity of cash euros and special training has been provided for personnel directly dealing with clients."
