Uzbekistan curtails gas supplies to Tajikistan, gas in Tajik capital cut off

The gas supply to Dushanbe residents was cut this morning, disappointing many residents of the city.

A Khovar news agency correspondent has contacted the state Tajikgas company's management. Tajikgas said that Uzbek gas companies had sharply curtailed gas supplies to Tajikistan for some reason. On the other hand, Uzbekistan has already supplied Tajikistan with the natural gas planned for the whole of 2001.

The Uzbek side is demanding prepayment for gas, and gas will be provided only under these terms. Despite the financial difficulties, taking the holy month of Ramadan into account, the heads of the Tajik and Uzbek gas companies are holding talks to provide Tajik people with gas.
