On Thursday the Uzbek parliament discussed a number of very important issues.

The issue of extending the president's term of office was touched upon. This sentiment is being viewed as logically right and scientifically based. Because experience shows that an elected president spends his first year adjusting and selecting people, while his last year is spent in preparations for his successor and for new elections.

Parliament Speaker Erkin Khalilov: "If the question was about Islam Karimov, we would make an exception for the first president of the Republic of Uzbekistan and deal with the issue accordingly. If we had done this, I am absolutely sure, our people would have supported the move completely. Many letters to the Supreme Assembly bear witness to this.

"For example, the Qosimov family from Namangan Region, Fayzi Soltunov living in Shofrikon District of Bukhara Region, Aniq Toghayev from Zomin District of Dzhizak Region, Qurbonov living in Quva District of Fergana Region and many others propose giving Islam Karimov life presidency and call on the Supreme Assembly deputies to support the move."
