he Uzbek parliament has approved a bill on holding a referendum on extending the presidential term in office from five to seven years and on electing a bicameral parliament.
The next issue on the agenda of the session was on holding a referendum in the Republic of Uzbekistan. The chairman of the Supreme Assembly [parliament], Erkin Khalilov, delivered a speech on this. His speech was about an important task that was before our country's parliament - the formation of a bicameral parliament, and holding a referendum with the aim of establishing what the public would decide.
President Karimov said in the previous sessions that the lower chamber will be a standing chamber and the upper chamber will be made of equal representatives from the Republic of Karakalpakstan, Regions and the city of Tashkent.
The speech also mentioned extending the president's Constitutional term in office from five years to seven, and it was said that legislative bodies had been receiving lots of appeals about it.
It is being planned that the future referendum will include the following questions:
1. Do you agree with the election of a bicameral parliament in the next session of the second convocation of the parliament of the Republic of Uzbekistan?
2. Do you agree with extending the president's Constitutional term in office from five years to seven years?
The deputies have decided this issue positively, and the relevant decision has been adopted.
