Security forces in Uzbekistan have thwarted an attempt by a criminal group to smuggle a rare copy of the 18-century Koran and individual leaves of the holy book of an earlier printing out of the country to sell to foreigners.

A preliminary investigation has brought to light the fact that those arrested intended to sell each of the 162 pages of the ancient Koran for 33,000 dollars and its 18-century copy for 60,000 dollars.
